Don’t Ship Lithium Batteries

Lithium BatteryRecently, our order fulfillment services have run in to a bit of a road block.  We are working with a very large pharmaceutical services company who is shipping promotional products.  One of these products is a digital alarm clock that is powered by small, 3V lithium batteries (like the kind in wrist watches).  These small power devices are causing major headaches for our staff and our clients.  According to IATA, lithium batteries are considered a hazardous material.  In fact, in order to legally ship them, you must be certified CFR49 (for domestic shipping) or IATA (for international shipping).  The bad part?  Nobody – and I mean nobody, not US Customs, UPS, FedEx, DHL, or the manufacturer, could provide us with this information prior to our having issues.  It makes me wonder: how many other companies are relying on the shipping of batteries without full knowledge disclosure?

Currently, RLI is working to obtain both certifications.  Hopefully, this will eliminate the issues we have had.  Go figure: a piece of metal the size of a penny causing such a commotion.
